Harry Gabriel fonds

The fonds consists of one hundred original black and white photographs which depict construction of the Alaska Highway from Dawson Creek, B.C. to Whitehorse, Yukon in 1942 and 1943. The majority of photographs capture the area between Fort Nelson to Watson Lake. The original caption list accompanies the photographs.

Also included is an original photograph of Klondike Kate with her autograph, postcards with Yukon images, and two greeting cards.

The fonds consists of 285 original coloured slides and two 8 mm films. The slides predominantly capture life in Old Crow and the surrounding area. Many people are identified including Philippe Dicquemare, Bishop Marsh, Rev. J. Simon, Deacon Joe Kykiainchuk, Martha Kendi, Clara Frost, Joe Netro, Edith Josie, Neil McDonald, Johnnie Moses, Eliza Steamboat and the Frost family. Subject matter includes log cabins of Old Crow residents, the nursing station, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) building, and Anglican Church. The photographs also capture activities of swimming, berry picking, dog races, snowshoe races, setting a muskrat trap and rabbit snare, stretching beaver skins, preparing a caribou skin, and travel on the barge, the "Brainstorm". Images of Rampart House, Fort Yukon, Dawson City and Whitehorse are also included. The films capture a variety of scenes and show the nursing station, the "Brainstorm", a First Nation woman scraping a moosehide, men butchering a caribou, a log boom, the Porcupine River freezing up, people cutting ice blocks, three airplanes on the frozen river, the first snow machines in Old Crow, ice fishing, the river breakup, and a celebration on the river bank. People in the films include Effie Linklater, Margaret Marsh, Sarah Abel, Stephen Frost, and Philippe Dicquemare.

The fonds consists of copies of photographs taken on the Berry brothers' mining claims in the Klondike, and a group of men in front of the Klondyke Hotel and Delmonico Restaurant, Dawson City, Yukon.

The collection consists of 39 original colour photographs of Faro, Yukon after the June 13, 1969 lightning fire which destroyed much of the town. Images depict fire damage and the construction of new houses. The photographs were taken by Bob Studds of Whitehorse.

The scrapbook (which includes 150 photographs and newspaper clippings) and individual photographs depicts images along the Alaska Highway during its construction and completion, as well as scenes of Yukon and Alaska. There are also interesting shots of Major Nixon and his friends at social events and in their Whitehorse barracks. The textual records include newspaper clippings collected by Nixon; Northwest Service Command (NWSC) correspondence, minutes, notes, memos and reports; and a description of the Alaska Highway, possibly a news release.
