"Writing for Series Television" : [class list]

File consists of a class list for "Writing for Series Television", the 1997 workshop ran between 6 January and 17 January, 1997.

The program description for the course reads: "The Edmonton-based Television and Film Institute for Screenwriters and The Banff Centre for the Arts created this 12-day workshop to assist Canadian writers in securing writing contracts in the series television industry in Canada. This training workshop was designed to help intermediate and senior level professional writers develop the skills and credentials they need to qualify for work in Canadian series television.

For the most part, hiring decisions in series television are based on two things: the writer’s personal relationships with employers in the field; and the employer’s belief, upon evaluating the writer’s body of work, that the writer has ability in the specific genre being produced. Unfortunately, even established Canadian writers often lack experience in series television and many have not had an opportunity to establish the relationships with story editors, script consultants and series writers that will lead to jobs. The Writing for Series Television workshop addressed these problems.

Participants were given the opportunity to interact with a professional writer/story editor working in Canadian-produced series television. The 1997 workshop was led by Scot Morison, the senior story editor of “Jake and the Kid”. To ensure that each person received maximum benefit from his or her contact with the story editor, the number of workshop participants was limited to eight. Each participant completed the workshop with a suitable writing sample and was able to work with a story editor who offered potential employers an evaluation of the participant’s abilities."
