CHAT Television fonds

  • CA MED med-507
  • Fonds
  • 1948-1998 ; predominant 1960-1994

The fonds consists of collection of images related to CHAT-TV, the station, programming, advertising and commercial advertising; 75 U-Matic ¾ inch videocassettes chronicling newsworthy events between the years 1985 - 1994 as well as raw footage shot in the field for later incorporation into newscasts or documentaries, while other items represent the master edited programs. Most of the footage has been edited into news/sports/farm stories, which would have played during the Newscast. These include reporters like Harv Speers, JD Lewis, Tracey McFarlane, and Francis Silvaggio. Also included are some items which represent stock footage and/or promotional items. These tapes are invaluable for the glimpse they give into what was going on in the area defined by the MHMAG mandate for that time period, and, if it was a continuing piece, show the progression of the story ; 215 reels of film, all 16mm, was mostly produced by CHAT, although some was received from elsewhere including members of the Medicine Hat community and larger commercial productions. They include assorted raw and edited footage of advertisements, cattle, ceremonies, events, interviews, military, miscellaneous items, music, news items, parades, political items, scenery, speeches, sports, and Stampedes. Some reels contain a large number of short clips, some of which have no local significance, all spliced together without any apparent organizational strategy. Other reels are more logical. Many of the Tiger Talk interviews by Bob Ridley, for example, are followed or preceded by footage of individual players from the teams discussed in the interview.
