Oliver H. Johnson fonds

The fonds consists of the 1908-1909 homestead diary of Oliver H. Johnson. It provides a daily record of his activities as he broke land, built a house, barn, and other structures, interacted with his neighbours, including the Stones, Sinclairs, Fergusons, Bredins, Hardins, Smiths, Germaine, Arnold, Allie Brick, Mead & Grant, members of the Beaver First Nation, and others, and travelled back to Edmonton to join his family. The last few pages of the diary list recipes, drugs, groceries, dry goods, hardware, and accounts, some of which may date from his time as a storekeeper.

The fonds consists of two pages of biography written by the Loggie sisters when they interviewed Dr. Lucy Bagnall in 1955; and a copy of the diary kept by Lucy on a daily basis from May 19 to December 15, 1912. It gives an account of their journey north from Calgary to Grande Prairie, and the first months of their life in the Grande Prairie district. Much of the diary is about building the house; everyday activities such as cooking, washing, and getting food; breaking land, threshing, and haying; church services, with topics and attendees; books that Lucy is reading; and visiting with the neighbours. Dr. Bagnall mentions names such as Appleton, Cranston, Braybrook, Lister, Roberts, Canon Smith, Sharpe, Anderson, McLevin, Trimming, Campbell, Lyster, Parker, Higbee, Meade and Grant, Van Schaick, Moxhay, Forbes, Bredin, Powell, Bousfield, South, Perraton, Matheson, Carter, Ray, Patterson, McAusland, Johnson, Blake, Norley, Hunskor, Hendry, Ryley, Ferguson, and Kennedy.

The fonds consists of 86 issues of the Frontier Signal from the first issue on September 28, 1914 to the last issue on August 10, 1916.

The content consists of local and general news, telegraphic war news, editiorials and opinion pieces, farm and animal information, and advertisements from local businesses.

Several issues are missing: in 1914--Oct. 1, Oct 22, and Nov 5; in 1915--Jan 14, July 1, 8, and 15, Oct 14 and 21; and in 1916--Feb 17 and 24, and July 6 and 13.

The fonds consists of eight issues of the Spirit River Echo, from September 3, 1920 to April 25, 1921. The newspaper is 13 x 19 in. and 8 pages in length. The content consists of community announcements, news, and advertisements; world events; and items of general interest such as health, humour and agriculture. On the back page is a serial story. There are two copies of the April 25, 1921 paper, one with a handwritten note saying, "This is Exhibit A Lawlor vs. Cramer, Spirit River 5th April, 1921."
