Fonds consists of administrative and operational records of the Peter and Catharine Whyte Foundation and the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. Textual records: 1. Board of Trustees; 2. Administration; 3. Archives; 4. Gallery; 5. Heritage collections; 6. Photography. Photographs: A. Foundation buildings; B. Gallery exhibition installation shots (negatives only); C. Events and guests (including Banff Day, gallery openings, special events and guests); D. Displays (inside and outside of the museum); E. General (mainly people, places and events in Banff and area; includes photographs produced by Museum staff not included in other series). Photographs were made by staff of the Whyte Foundation, private photographers, and others. Three sound recordings were made for research purposes during the course of Gallery operations; pertain to Ann Wheeler, David Settles and Peter Whyte art and exhibit. Other sound recording is of Grant MacEwan talk at the Whyte Museum, December 1993; recorded by Woody MacPhail. Video recording is of Banff Day 1997 by Eddie Hunter. 2 audio cassettes are a recording of the Clifford Jackson White memorial service held September 13, 2003 hosted by the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. Fonds consists of a broad-ranging commercial negative collection. Includes four series. I. Scenic and documentary views, 2839 items; includes film and glass negatives in sizes up to 8 X 10 inches. Pertains to Banff and area buildings, facilities, activities, events, such as Banff Winter Carnival and Banff Indian Days; Indians; scenic views of Banff and area and other Rocky Mountains locations. II. Commercial views, 765 items; includes buildings, businesses, facilities, sports events, organizations, conventions, group portraits, displays and presentations. III. Mixed views, 242 items; includes scenic, documentary and commercial views similar to material in previous series. Also includes some views know to have been produced by Fred Armbrister, a professional photographer who operated out of Lake Louise, Alberta, ca.1930. IV. Portraits, ca.4600. This series contains four groups: A. 1920s-1950s, most unidentified; B. 1930s and 1940s, arranged alphabetically, many unidentified; C. 1950s, arranged alphabetically, most identified, many with proofs (prints); D. 1950s, arranged chronologically by job number. V. Other, ca.50 items. Includes 36 colour stereo transparencies, ca.1955, re Administration Building and gardens, Banff-Jasper Highway scenics, mountain sheep, autumn colour, Banff Avenue, George Noble and staff. Also includes small number of commercial prints produced by Noble, including several large hand-painted views. Fonds is accompanied by business record books, 1950-1958, 2 v. (M533)

Collection consists of views along the CPR between Lake Louise, Alberta, and the Fraser Canyon in British Columbia. Includes photographic print of painted work by Eugene L'Africain, based on Notman & Son photograph, and titled "Banff Springs Hotel and Mount Rundle, Banff, Alberta, Canada. Produced by Notman firm.

Fonds consist of personal and professional papers of Walter S. Painter, 1902-1956, and Painter family photographs, ca.1905-ca.1955. Professional papers, include notebooks; cost books; reports on Painter system of prefabrication housing, 1939; plans and renderings of CPR buildings, Painter Home and other buildings, n.d., 1906-1929; articles about Painter and his projects, n.d., 1902-1934. The papers primarily concern Painter's architectural career, theatres, CPR projects including stations and hotels from Montreal to Victoria, Banff Springs Hotel, Cave and Basin, Glacier, British Columbia projects and the Lake Louise Chalet. Personal papers, ca.1930-1956, record Painter's views on economics, philosophy, religion, housing, etc. Family photographs, pertaining to Walter Painter, Stella Painter, Betty Painter and Brook Painter. Includes Painter home, activities, friends, trips. Also, photographs of Walter Painter projects, including construction of the Banff Springs Hotel, Lake Louise Chalet and Cave and Basin.

Fonds consists of copies of lithographed photographic images of mountains and mountain scenes from Wilcox's books, "Camping in the Canadian Rockies" (1896) and "The Rockies of Canada" (1909). Also includes print titled "Moraine Lake" and signed: Walter D. Wilcox.

Fonds consists of manuscripts and published articles on hunting and fishing, wildlife, life on the trail, etc. for various American outdoors magazines, 1929-1938; correspondence pertaining to guiding and publication of Vernon-Wood's articles, 1928-1940; other textual material, 1972; and photographs of Vernon-Wood with RCMP and firefighters, ca.1915. Includes a letter dated June 20,1874 from Owen Morris, Lieutenant Governor of the North West Territories, to Rev. John McDougall of Morleyville, Bow River, instructing McDougall to advise Indians of arrival and intentions of the North West Mounted Police, boundary commission and aims of the Queen

Fonds consists of photographic views from around the world by Calgary photographer Harry Pollard. Pollard, 1880-1968, became a CPR photographer in 1924 and spent many summers in the Banff area during the 1920s and 1930s. The prints formerly hung in Storm Mountain Lodge.

Fonds includes a scrapbook, a blotting book of drawings, and one photographic print. The scrapbook contains newspaper accounts by travellers in the Rockies and Selkirks, particularly descriptions of Banff town, Banff Springs Hotel, the hot springs and vicinity. The Stewarts are frequently mentioned, having extended their hospitality to the various writers. The album has been autographed at a later date by Olive Stewart Foster. The blotting book contains 54 drawings pertaining to unknown persons and locations and is thought to have belonged to George Stewart. Drawings are possibly by Rev. F. G. Christmas. Location of images appears to be Manitoba or north-western Ontario. Photographs are: Stewart family in front of their first home in Banff and Cave and Basin bathhouse, both by Boorne & May, Photographers, Calgary, N.W.T., ca.1888; and "Grandmother Stewart's house in Banff.
