Inventory

The sub-series consists of records relating to the inventory and stock used and sold through the various stores and locations of C. S. Hook & Sons, including businesses run by the company and businesses related to the company. Most of the records relate to a specific store or branch (optics, jewellery and giftware, ladies ware) of the business, although it is not always clear which one. Among the records are orders, stock books, and inventory lists from the 1940s to 1960s, Canadian Coachways Ltd. Shippers’ Receipts from 1963, and Northern Alberta Railway Companies shipping receipt books from the 1950s and 1960s, some of which were dismantled to compact their bulk.

The records were arranged by the archivist according to type of record and, as far as possible, business branch or location.

Sales

The sub-series consists of records relating to the sales made by C. S. Hook & Sons in all branches and locations of the business and also include sales records of subsequent businesses related to C. S. Hook & Sons. Some records relate to specific and types of merchandise or services provided or to a specific branch of the business or store location, although it is sometimes difficult to determine which store is involved. The sales records include optometry related records such as signs, Pensioners’ Optical Services forms from 1962-1963, suggested fee schedules from the 1950s and 1960s, and Dr. Robert Hook’s 1990 Appointment Book. Related to the jewellery and giftware branch are watch sales books from the 1940s to the 1960s, jewellery purchase agreements from the 1950s and 1960s, parcel post insurance coupon books and Personal Jewellery and/or Camera Policies from the 1960s, Certificates of Guarantee and Registration for Columbia Tru-Fit Diamond Rings from the 1960s, records related to watch repairs from the 1940s to 1960s, Northern Alberta Railways Co. Employees’ Watch Comparison Reports from 1964, records related to film developing from the 1960s, C.O.D. forms and labels from the 1960s, a mostly empty customer book from 1963, Merchandise Vouchers, and various receipts, accounts, and orders. The sales records also include material from 1962 related to the traveling part of the business including lists of contacts and agents, a trip report, list of expenses, and a poster.

The records have been arranged according to type or subject by the archivist.

Promotion

The sub-series consists of material relating to C. S. Hook & Sons advertising and promotion, especially focusing on the jewellery and giftware branch of the business. The records include a 1959 list of prizes and winners from the opening of the Fort St. John store, official opening prize ballots, a complimentary Christmas turkey certificate, store display sketches, a 1954 promotional letter, CFGP advertising scripts from the 1960s, a CJDC rate card, a description of the listening habits of the Peace River Country, records relating to advertising in the Peace River Story, clippings of newspaper advertisements, a clipping about employee Roy Bell, and a photograph of employee Harry Kigiona.

The records have been arranged according to topic or type of advertising by the archivist.

Reference Collections

The sub-series consists of early promotional materials and maps of the Peace River Country; six placemats of drawings of pioneer buildings by various artists; and four reference booklets (Interesting Facts about Grande Prairie, 1930; Edmonton to Peace River and the North Country, 1920-21; The Peace River Country Canada, 1930; and the Peace River Land Recording Division).

Bushes & Trees

The file consists of 261 slides dating from 1954 to 1988 from a variety of locations including the Beaverlodge Experimental Station and the Beaverlodge Nursery.There are slides of chokecherry, bird cherry, buffalo berry, pincherry, gooseberry, raspberry, blueberry, plums, currants, cranberry, dogwood, cotoneaster, aronia, hawthorn, maple, basswood, elm, ash, barberry, caragana, Ohio buckeye, poplar, saskatoon, mountain ash, oak, birch, and roses, including slides of some of John Wallace's cultivars: the Copper Schubert chokecherry, the Green Island cranberry, and the Altaglow saskatoon. The slides have been numbered according to their original order within the binder labelled "Saskatoon, Chokecherry, Pincherry, Current, Cranberry, Dogwood, Hawthorn, Mnt. Ash, Willow, Pine, Poplar, Maple, Elm, Bur Oak, Larch, Green Ash", but blank spaces originally between some slides have been removed.

Apples & Crabs, Pears, Pruning

The file consists of 251 slides dating from 1946 to 1988 from a variety of locations including the Beaverlodge Experimental Station and the Beaverlodge Nursery.There are 245 slides of apple and crabapple trees and fruit, 5 slides of pear trees, and one slide of pruning, including slides of some of John Wallace's crabapple cultivars: Albright, Arctic Dawn, and Snowcap. The slides have been numbered according to their original order within the binder labelled "Apples, Pears, Pruning", but blank spaces originally between some slides have been removed.

Kin Activities

The series consists of photographs showing Kin major projects such as the Memorial Arena, the Bear Creek Pool, Bear Creek Park development, the RecPlex Arena and Pool, and building the Kin Centre. There are also photographs of activities such as playing on the Kinsmen Hockey Team, fundraising events and presentations; the Annual Car Award, and special events such as the Father, Son, Daughter Banquet in 1975 and the Kinettes and Kinsmen cooking for community breakfasts and Bar-b-ques. An accrual in 2012 includes 2 photos of the Kinsmen Radio Auction.

This sub-series contains time certificates of labor from the Alberta Forest Service for Melba’s work in janitorial services and as a weather observer.

Charles & Phyllis Stewart

The sub-series consists of Charles and Phyllis' wedding invitation, and 36 photographs of them and their children from the time of their marriage until after the death of Charles. There is also genealogical information and an additional 72 photographs of the descendants of the children of Charles and Phyllis Stewart, organized according to each child. These include school photographs, family photographs and wedding portraits.

Education & Training

The series consists of exam results from high school; a 1946 yearbook from the University of Alberta; transcripts and correspondence regarding courses she took from 1962 to 1974; certificates attained at different levels of her training such as the first "Letter of Authority" and a "Permanent June E Certificate"; and a 1976 convocation booklet showing Phyllis' graduation with a Bachelor of Education Degree from the U of A, her Bacelor of Education Degree, and a photograph of Phyllis on the day of her graduation
