Dent family fonds

The fonds consists of records created and acquired by Leslie, Kathleen, and Ralph Dent in the course of their work and private lives. Leslie's records include photographs, training notes, and correspondence from his service during the First World War, correspondence and records related to his union activities and work for CNR, and a significant amount of material from his amateur performance career. This latter material includes annotated and non-annotated song sheets, programs, and song lyrics. Kathleen's records include a self-created cookbook, certificates received on significant dates such as birthdays and anniversaries, and photographs related to her personal life and performances with Leslie. Ralph's records consist of photographs from his service in the Second World War, training notebooks and other military-related textual material, scrapbooks, personal correspondence, and war-time publications related to flight education and training.

The collection consists of photographs that depict various sites, people, and community events in a quadrant of Alberta to the southeast of Red Deer that is bordered by the communities of Three Hills, Drumheller, and Youngstown. Most of the photos focus on Youngstown and surrounding villages. The photos depict baseball games, picnics, the interior of a Drumheller coal mine, a group portrait of recent army recruits from Youngstown in 1916, unidentified people and farm sites, and various businesses/buildings in the area.

Donald Carson fonds

The fonds consists of photographs taken by a friend of Carson's and some textual material related to Carson's military service. The photographs depict Carson and men he served with from 1939 to 1945. The scrapbook contains a near-complete visual record of activities undertaken by Carson's unit from the summer of 1944 to winter of 1945, including images of the invasion of Walcheren Island; the Alligator tank that hit a mine and caused Carson's injuries; various sites visited by Carson during the war, including England, Normandy, Ghent, Bruges, Antwerp, and Walcheren Island; identified images of various servicemen; images of civilians in liberated areas; social activities; Christmas celebrations in 1944; German prisoners of war; and Allied service members, including women.

The scrapbook also contains some textual material including obituaries of Carson's father and brother; currency notes from Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany; the telegram sent to Thelma Carson informing her of Donald's injury; Carson's discharge paper; a leaflet given to Donald's father, James, during the First World War that specifies behaviour expected of British personnel in France; and letters drafted by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Canadian commander, Lt. Gen. H.D.G. Crerar, that were distributed to Allied personnel on the eve of the D-Day invasion.

Veterans Against Nuclear Arms, Edmonton Branch fonds

The fonds consists of a nearly complete documentary record of the history of the Edmonton VANA branch and includes meeting agendas and minutes, correspondence, membership rosters, committee records, conference and seminar files, posters, pamphlets, press releases, speaking notes, and resolutions.

There are also records related to specific actions, protests, and rallies related to the Persian Gulf War, Hiroshima Memorial Day, Auschwitz Memorial Day, and Hands Across the Border.

There is also a complete run of The VANA Courier, as well as newsletters from other VANA branches and the central office. In addition to VANA publications, there are also magazines, newsletters, and pamphlets from like-minded organizations, among them the Fraser Valley Peace Letter; Saskatchewan Peace News; Peace, Environment, and Third World Development Network News; Socialist Voice; and Ploughshares Monitor.

The photos and slides depict Edmonton VANA events, rallies, and conferences as well as trips to national and international events in Ottawa and the Soviet Union, among others.

The audiocassettes contain recorded remarks and presentations from a 1988 national VANA conference entitled Peacemaking and Peacekeeping: Canada and the United Nations held at Dalhousie University, Halifax.

John A.W. Langstone fonds

The fonds consists of material exclusively related to Langstone's wartime service as a chaplain in the Canadian Army. The material consists of correspondence, personnel records, records derived from the administration of Langstone's ministry, diaries, sermon notes, orders of service, Khaki University of Canada records, newspapers, magazines, and ephemera collected by Langstone in liberated zones of Europe.

The newspapers and magazines include issues from various English parish newsletters (including the Helmsley, Milford, St. Alban's, and St. Andrew's parishes), issue No. 9 of The Lowdown (Canadian military paper), a magazine published by candidates and staff at the Officers' Training Centre in Brockville, and V-E and V-J Day editions of The Maple Leaf (Canadian military paper).

The records also include material that Langstone used to teach courses at the Khaki University of Canada (an accredited school program provided for Canadian service personnel in Europe) and the Protestant Church School in the Netherlands, as well as detailed records related to the Officers' Training Centre in Brockville.

The ephemeral material consists of various maps, guides, and pamphlets collected by Langstone in liberated countries. This material was created by local administrations to be distributed amongst Allied personnel for the purpose of orientation and outreach.

The photographs depict various locations across Europe that Langstone visited. Several of these images are printed on postcard stock and many of them have notes or messages written on them by Langstone or other correspondents.

The records include correspondence, diaries, clerical documents, family photographs, cookbooks, professional writings, and genealogical information. The records relate to such subjects as the domestic and professional lives of women across the 20th century; Albertan legal history; Albertan religious life and history; the evolution of public morality from the late 19th to the 21st centuries; the evolution of etiquette, entertainment, and home economics in the same period; and military records related to both the First and Second World Wars, including Canadian involvement in the armed forces and life on the home-front.

The series consists of correspondence, photographs, speeches, professional writings, memoirs, records related to his legal and municipal career, records related to his family's time in North Dakota, personal recollections related to the First and Second World Wars, certificates, and diplomas. There are also many records related to Bisset's career as a judge and City Alderman. These include copies of speeches, reports, correspondence, council material from the Dominion Conference of Mayors held in Montreal in 1935, photographs of the inauguration of Overland Mail Route (1943), and Canadian Federation of Mayors and Municipalities conferences records.
