The fonds covers the entire period of the society's history and consists of administrative records, minutes of meetings and hearings, case files, reports, photographs, and publications. However, there are no administrative records before 1960 and no standing committee minutes before 1979 have survived. The Law Society of Alberta fonds consists of the following general series: Members' files (1907-1989), Photographs (1905-1975) Publications (1903-1995), and Roll of Members (1907-1995). The fonds is divided into sub-fonds representing distinct functions of the society throughout its history: the Secretary (1901-1989) the Benchers (1907-1989) the Executive Committee; (1962-1989) other standing committees (1927-1992), and Special and ad hoc committees (1979-1992). The Law Society of Alberta fonds documents the development of the society's policies and activities as a professional regulatory body since its inception in 1907 as well as changes in the legal; system and legal education in Alberta during this period. The records provide evidence for biographical research and the study of legal and social history.
