The Amber Valley Journal was conceived of by Vilma Nicholson in a spirit of revival among the Black people in Amber Valley following the creation of the Amber Valley Community Association and the Amber Valley Choral Group. It was meant to bring insights into the history and traditions of the community including literature, art, music, dance, drama and entertainment, as well as profiles, reviews and research. Only two editions were published, black and white, 5.5" by 8.5", photocopied on plain paper, with cover-stock covers.
The records include for the years 1931 - 1938: financial information; correspondence; Statements of Grant; Inspector of Schools reports, contracts, supplies orders and censuses for the years 1933, 1935, 1937 and 1938. Included in the correspondence, a letter by Edwin Parr forming a Trustee Association dated 1935.
Artifacts include a tin of Simpkins fruit drops; a logo t-shirt; Athabasca Dick beer bottles a commemorative beer by Alley Cat Brewery; two posters designed by Margaret Anderson for Athabasca Dick beer, Robert W. Service’s “Athabasca Dick,” and the beer bottles; German white wine bottles relabeled Town of Athabasca Centennial 1911 – 2011; “Athabasca Memories” DVD, a compilation of Ed Polanski’s film recordings; “Flavour of Athabasca” cookbook coordinated by Shirley Dubie; quilted banners created by the Athabasca Quilters Guild; 1ooth Anniversary patch and pins; "Taste of Athabasca" poster; two books “Why Athabasca: A Brief History of the Origins of Athabasca Landing,” by Dr. Greg Johnson; and “Athabasca: 100 Years in Our Own Words,” published by the Athabasca Advocate newspaper.
The fonds consists of a book "Bowtell Tales...to 1976."There are 5 photographs including a class from Bowtell School, and Velma, Jean and Jimmie in 1936 in Moose Jaw. There are two photographs of Guy Mack and the 1949-50 Rochester Rockets boys baseball team, a 1950-51 certificate for the Rochester Boxing Club, 1950-1954 business licenses for Mack's Coffee Bar, and a ledger book dates 1948-1955. 20 photos of Lee Mack and Edward Risdale, Ed's brother Kenny and Dorothy Risdale and their four children, the LeGrand Store, CNR section house, Searle elevator and other Rochester, Alberta buildings; 18094-95, 18278-18297. There are CNR waybills for furniture shipped in 1959, 1959 and Edward Risdale's 1968 Alberta Social Credit League membership cards. The funeral home record for Guy Mack is also included.
