Soper family fonds

The fonds consists of 120 pages written by Frank's daughter, Florence (Soper) Roberts, 1914- about the Soper family. This was later reworked and published in Western People, a supplement to the Western Producer, in 9 installments from Jan. to Mar. 1984. Three of the photographs from Frank's studio are views of Athabasca in [1911]. Two are mounted and hand tinted. Nine other photographs are in postcard format of buildings around Athabasca [1911] including : cemetery in 1911, Grand Union Hotel, Dominion Day, Athabasca River fire patrol boat, Hudson's Bay store, Revillon Freres Store, Cote and Smith surveyors, the telegraph building, St. Matthews Anglican church, and Massey Harris Farm Implements building. There is a portrait of Charles, Marion and son, Ernest c.1910.

The fonds consists of a 1976 university assignment on the Richmond Park District, photographs relating to the Nov. 1994 launching of the history book "Reflections from North of the River", and photographs from the Feb. 1995 dog-sled postal run from Athabasca to Edmonton to commemorate Edmonton's bicentennial. There are also 9 photographs taken in 1992 of the Alberta Pacific Forest Industries mill site.

The fonds consists of records of the Watson family including diaries of William Salmon Watson (1944-1970), account book of Thomas Watson (1891-1892), tax notices for MD of Cartier and MD of Athabasca, funeral cards, correspondence and 12 family photographs. The family photographs include: James Watson and his wife, Maggie; Agnes Watson, her husband, George Bell and their daughter Cecilia; Thomas Watson Sr. (marked with an X on a tintype photograph) with two of his sons; and the Watson family in June, 1941. There are also 239 unnumbered photographs which were taken [1920s] and include bee hives, farm animals, farm machinery, horticulture, threshing and a motor trip to the mountains.

The work diary details crops planted, money received, expenditures, land purchased in Ontario and farm equipment purchases. The fonds consists of 65 col. slides: 32 of Athabasca's Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration's parade and 33 of the 1967 production of the play "The Athabasca Story" . Bert wrote a letter to the Athabasca Archives in Oct. 2000 talking about his businesses and other activities carried out in Athabasca. Included was information about the town's 50th anniversary celebrations specifically "The Athabasca Story" play and it's author, John Havard.

The fonds consists of Elizabeth Speers ration coupon book from WWII, the program for the 4th Annual Wall of Fame Dinner of the University of Alberta, Nov.1, 1988. Elizabeth's grandson, Larry Reginald Speers, was an inductee at that event. There is also a 1973 acrylic painting of the Athabasca Brick School by Viola (Silverthorn) Speers, William's wife and a 1977 acrylic painting, a Botticelli copy, by Bessie (Silverthorn) Speers, Roy's wife. Bessie also donated an Athabasca Clay Products serving bowl with lid, a butter paddle and a pipe.

The fonds consists of the Perryvale Store and Sheldon Apartment ledger books, Mrs. Whiteley's account book with the store, a record of the number of board feet cut each day at the mill, and the Perryvale Post Office record book. Page 4 of the Stratford Beacon-Herald newspaper of January 30, 1924 contains an article about the accidental shooting death of Gertrude Whiteley.
