Margaret Clarke fonds

The fonds consists of textual records in addition to a few photographs, photocopied photographs, and an audio cassette. All records dated after 2009 are conservation copies. The textual records primarily consist of documents related to the research conducted by Clarke for her Masters thesis in Native History at the University of Alberta entitled "Reconstituting the Fur Trade Community of the Assiniboine Basin, 1793 to 1812". In addition, Clarke has conducted extensive genealogical research regarding the Bray and McKay families as well as the Hudson's Bay Company, especially regarding the men of Brandon House. The textual records include handwritten notes and timelines recorded by Clarke; numerous printouts of internet research regarding Clarke's genealogy work; pamphlets; numerous photocopied journal articles, book reviews, and chapters from various publications and periodicals; email and written correspondence regarding her graduate studies and genealogical work; lecture notes and term papers from various classes attended throughout her undergraduate and graduate studies; original and photocopied newspaper articles, biographies, maps, bibliographies, and diary entries; copied sections of the 1901 Canada Census for the province of Manitoba, districts of Selkirk and Provencher, sub-districts of St. Francois-Xavier, St. Boniface, and St. Boniface Town; several copies of various volumes and issues of the Canada Tree periodical edited by Clarke; several editions of the Neya Powagans Métis Newsletter, The Rupert's Land Newsletter, and Relatively Speaking from the Alberta Genealogical Society 1973-1998; and several volumes of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography spanning 1967-1990. Other textual records pertain to Clarke's contract research for various Parks Canada projects as well as her involvement in community development via Métis L.I.N.K.S. (an early intervention program for youth), the Alberta Aboriginal Healing Foundation, and various projects organized by the Red Deer Local of the Métis Nation of Alberta #84. A significant portion of the photographs depict various plaques and signs situated in the Steele Narrows Historic Site, in addition to one photograph of Edmond Bray McKay and one of the McInnes Island Lighthouse in British Columbia. Also included are several photocopies of photographs depicting various members of the families about which Clarke conducted extensive genealogical research, especially the Bray and McKay families, often photocopied from other archival collections. Also included is an audio cassette entitled Minnesota Massacre, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Collection consists of photographs of geologic formations and topographic features; native peoples; northern communities; logging, mining, fishing and whaling activities; survey field parties; and miscellaneous subjects including some of U.S. Geologic Survey offices and staff. Most photographs were taken in Alaska, but also represented are the Yukon, Virginia, Maryland and Texas. Texas photographs are of oil fields and refineries, ca. 1917. Most photographs are dated and include descriptive captions. Photographs received in albums but removed for conservation purposes.

Nares, Sherard Osborn, Sir William Parry, John Rae, Sir John Ross and Sir James Clark Ross; photostat copies of records found on northern Ellesmere Island in 1948 left by the Nares (1875-1876) and Peary (1905-1906) expeditions; notebook titled Glacial action high latitudes, discussing research by Arctic expeditions undertaken between 1585 and 1887; engraving of Sir G. Back and photograph of Sir F.L. McClintock; newsclippings; and other miscellaneous documents and artifacts.

Includes correspondence and memoranda, 1950-1960; reports of medical surveys, 1956-1960; travel diaries; and hospital reports of Inuit tuberculosis cases. Also includes copies of L.E.C. Davies's The medical history of the Western Arctic Eskimo, 1771-1960 (typescript with mounted black and white photographs); script for a talk on tuberculosis; illustrated report of communities flooded near Hay Lake, 1963; and slides of the Yukon and Northwest Territories.

Fonds consists chiefly of material relating to the Canadian Arctic Expedition, 1913-1918, led by Vilhjalmur Stefansson. Includes correspondence, biological reports and official journals kept by F. Johansen, chiefly on hydrography and entomology, as a member of the Southern Party of the Expedition. Also includes correspondence, biological reports and diaries relating to F. Johansen's field research in Hudson and James Bays, June 1920 - October 1920; scientific reports and species lists resulting from other field expeditions by F. Johansen and others, 1897-1926; and transcriptions of articles and personal narratives of scientific explorers, chiefly on hydrography, geology and meteorology, ca. 1804 to the early 1900s.

Stallworthy's brother Bill in England, and his wife Hilda, much of it written from various R.C.M.P. detachments and including official reports and documents; manuscripts of articles and lectures on the North; material about H. Stallworthy including personal documents, newsclippings and articles; Hilda Stallworthy's diaries, daily journals and notebooks; miscellaneous materials; and slides and negatives of northern scenes. Fonds also includes copies of H. Stallworthy's R.C.M.P. service and medical files obtained from the R.C.M.P. Archives in Ottawa, Ontario, by William Barr as additional sources for his biography Red serge and polar bear pants : the biography of Harry Stallworthy, RCMP (Edmonton: The University of Alberta Press, 2004).
