City of Grande Prairie Historical Photograph collection

Collection of photographs removed from a display, possibly created for the 25th anniversary of the City of Grande Prairie in 1983. The photographs were arranged mostly in date order, from the first business on the future site of Grande Prairie ca. 1907 to members of the Old Timers Association in 1963. The photographs were numbered in order of how they were arranged in the display, and that original order has been retained, along with the item descriptions which accompanied the photographs. Subjects include buildings, people and events associated with the history of Grande Prairie.

Wally and Doris Tansem fonds

The fonds consists of four photographs of the South Slope School and students taken during Doris Tansem’s time teaching in 1945-46; weekly issues of the Wanhamite, a community newspaper written by Wally Tansem and Lawrence Laughy; printed material authored by Wally Tansem; 20 aerial photographs of the Lassiter area north of Wanham; some news clippings; and Wally’s research files for his self-published book “Foulest of Murders”.

The fonds consists of the correspondence, personal records, financial records, and photographs of the Charles McNaught family. The material is arranged in files for each member of the family and general files for photographs and miscellaneous records. The correspondence is mainly from one family member to each another, but also includes extended family members and friends. The financial records for the McNaught farm are with John and Noel McNaught's records. There is one artwork, a pencil sketch done by Euphemia (Betty) McNaught when she was about 11 years old.

Oliver H. Johnson fonds

The fonds consists of the 1908-1909 homestead diary of Oliver H. Johnson. It provides a daily record of his activities as he broke land, built a house, barn, and other structures, interacted with his neighbours, including the Stones, Sinclairs, Fergusons, Bredins, Hardins, Smiths, Germaine, Arnold, Allie Brick, Mead & Grant, members of the Beaver First Nation, and others, and travelled back to Edmonton to join his family. The last few pages of the diary list recipes, drugs, groceries, dry goods, hardware, and accounts, some of which may date from his time as a storekeeper.
