Athabasca Archives Hudson's Bay Company collection

The collection consists of newspaper clippings, lists of accounts, letterbooks, personal papers, correspondence, inspection reports, transportation modes and costs, inventories pertaining to the Hudson's Bay Company and its presence in Alberta and Athabasca, where it established a post from 1877-1924. Included are articles from the Beaver magazine: "Skippering a scow" on the Athabasca by N.A.Howland; "The Last of the Brigades" by Guy Blanchet; and "Inland Journey" by J.W.Chalmers (Treaty 8).

Fonds consists of Bo Holroyd warden journals for 1920 to 1947 (1928 journal missing). Journals present a personal record of work activities as Park Warden and Supervising Warden of Waterton Lakes National Park. Details pertain to patrols, horses, fire control, trail building and maintenance, search and rescue, fish and wildlife duties, law enforcement, supervision, administration, etc. They contain particularly valuable observations on ungulate populations, wildlife management, game, warden service duties and programs and human activity in the park.

Fonds consists primarily of presentation album titled "Landscapes," containing one hundred views along the Canadian Pacific Railway in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains. The album contains many popular views of the period and is inscribed to "W. Whyte Esq., General Superintendent, Western Division C.P.R., Winnipeg. With Boorne & May's Compliments. Calgary. January 1889." Also includes individual prints of similar views to those in the album and include views as far west as Yale, B.C. Twenty-two prints, attributable to Boorne and May through photographer numbers and titles on the fronts, are stamped "From J. Nicholson, Photo Artist, Boissevain, Man." on the reverse. Nicholson was a professional photographer at Boissevain, Manitoba between 1888 and 1893. His business was sold to Jas. E. Miers in 1893.

Fonds consists of records pertaining to the career of George William Rance who worked with the photography division of the Associated Screen News (ASN) travelling the world aboard the Empress ships. Rance also worked in the camera shop in the Banff Springs Hotel, Banff, Alberta and ASN's Head Office in Montreal, Quebec. Fonds consists of Associated Screen News photographs of Cochrane to Banff motor road, Banff townsite and environs, Banff-Lake Louise road, Mount Assiniboine, Waterton Lakes National Park, ca.1925. Also included in the fonds are photographs of various cruise destinations of the CPR Empress Line including Grenada, Rio de Janeiro, Martinique, Barbados, and the Empress of Australia, ca.1938 and 1 William Notman & Sons photograph of the Bow River Bridge and Cascade Mountain, ca.1905.

Audio tapes recorded to assist with preparation of newspaper reports and eventually used to prepare "Canadians on Everest." Transmissions included those communications exchanged between climbers and base camp and broadcasts monitored on another radio from Kathmandu transmissions, August to October 1982. Recordings were made on a small Hitachi recorder. Accompanied by notes.
