William Winter fonds

Gil Cardinal fonds

The fonds consists of records from Gil Cardinal’s independent and freelance projects; the film companies co-founded by Cardinal (Great Plains Productions, Kanata Productions, Strange Empire Productions); and his work for NFB, BBC, or other broadcasters.

The textual materials contain the complete business records of Great Plains Productions, creative records for specific projects (including scripts, notebooks, shot lists, story boards, and editing notes), administrative records for specific projects (including contracts, financial records, grant applications, and correspondence), developmental records related to unrealized projects, and personal records (including correspondence, speaking notes, speeches, and teaching material).

The films consist of home movies from Cardinal’s foster family (some of which were used as part of Foster Child); a tour of the Canadian Museum of Civilization with its architect, Douglas Cardinal; and release prints of Foster Child.

The videocassettes consist of original shooting tapes and completed masters of several projects. Most prominent among these are My Partners, My People, Our Home and Native Land, The Great Possibility, and David with F.A.S. There are also masters, but not shooting tapes, for several other projects including Big Bear, Chiefs (for both episodes directed by Cardinal), Totem, and others. Some of these masters are on DVD as well as videocassette.

The photographs, negatives, and slides consist of images shot by Cardinal during the course of filming, images of special events, and family photos.

Gil Cardinal

Cy and Mary Hampson fonds

The fonds consists of research material (including field journals and dissertation material), copies of publications, original manuscripts, correspondence, scrapbooks of wildlife-related clippings, scrapbooks of Outdoors Unlimited articles, pamphlets for Question Mark Trail, and files of the Hampson owned Cymar Films.

The majority of the photographs and negatives depict flora and fauna from around Alberta and northern Canada, with particular emphasis on birds and Arctic animals. The photos are skillfully composed by Cy Hampson and were developed by Mary Hampson. Many of the images were used by Cy Hampson in his research and teaching.

The films were created by Cy Hampson during the course of his doctoral research and depict flying squirrels and motion studies of other animals such as dogs and horses.

The fonds also consists of poetry journals, an extensive collection of programs from Edmonton and area theatrical productions, unpublished play scripts, and a scrapbook of Alberta drama and dance material created or collected by Mary Hampson.

The fonds also consists of films that were created under the Cymar Films label. There are other films that were co-produced with Mary Hampson and focus on a number of topics related to nature and wildlife. The films are all release prints or answer prints, with the exception of a few reels of work prints that have no corresponding release/answer prints. There are also production files related to these productions including licensing agreements, correspondence, project files, and broadcast agreements.

Tom Radford fonds

This material consists of textual and audiovisual records created over the course of Radford’s career, including material created under the Filmwest Associates, Great North Productions, Great Plains Productions, White Pine Pictures, and Clearwater Documentary labels.

    The material includes records related to completed projects such as Inuit Odyssey, Tar Sands, A Scattering of Seeds, The Power of Dreams, The End of Evolution, Ernest Brown: Pioneer Photographer (including audio reels of interviews with early Edmonton photographer Gladys Reeves), Hockey Night in Harlem, Ma Vlast, The Honour of the Crown, Arctic Dreamer, Great Lodges of the Canadian Rockies, The Great Divide, Road of Bones, Alberta Bound, Codebreakers, Roughing It: A Golfer’s Guide to the Universe, and Tipping Point.  These records include job files, production stills, scripts, camera tapes, and some masters.  There are also numerous records related to incomplete projects, unsolicited script submissions, and administrative records from Great North Communications, Clearwater Documentary, and Great Plains Productions.

Festival '88 fonds

The fonds includes records detailing the planning and organization of Festival ’88. Documents include board meeting minutes; contracts for services and sponsorships; contracts for performers and artists; detailed financial information including budgets and financial reports; records describing fundraising strategies; formal grant applications; executive correspondence; ballots and correspondence about the First Ukrainian Contemporary Music Awards; and press releases in both English and Ukrainian.

    The fonds also includes promotional materials such as posters, pamphlets, programs, and brochures; news clippings about the festival; and correspondence received in the aftermath of the festival. 30 photographs depict members of the Board of Directors at work as well as events over the course of the festival.

Festival '88

Bruce Haack fonds

The fonds consists of correspondence, contracts, songbooks, sheet music, programs, notebooks, diaries, and promotional material created or collected by Bruce Haack or Dimension 5 Records. The photographs and negatives depict Haack as well as friends and family dating from his youth in Alberta to his later years in Pennsylvania. Many of the photographs are arranged in scrapbooks and photo albums. The film reels are home movies created in Alberta.

The audio reels consist of master recordings of Haack’s music and commissioned work suck as advertising jingles. There are recordings of Dimension 5 albums, solo albums, as well as music written for theatre or film soundtracks. There are also digital files of all of these audio reels as well as published copies of his albums and re-issues on CD and vinyl record.

T.E. Brown fonds

Fonds consists of military service and personal records of Dr Thomas Erwin (T.E) Brown, a veteran of both World Wars and a doctor in Taber and Lethbridge. Records include Brown’s military notebooks, ration books, field notes and correspondence; an account book from Brown’s medical practice in Taber in the 1930s and pamphlets relating to pediatric medicines; photographs of Brown’s family; and a sketchbook with Brown’s drawings of his home and family.

God the Creator Drawing

The watercolour drawing depicts Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky as God the Father or Creator. The draft drawing was created by Julian Bucmaniuk in 1955 for use as the basis for the decoration of St. Josaphat’s Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Edmonton, Alberta.

The fonds consists of copious material related to grants, funding, and financial management; working documents, minutes, and correspondence related to affiliated organizations such as the Edmonton Professional Arts Council, the Independent Film and Video Arts Alliance (later the Independent Media Arts Alliance), and the Alberta Media Arts Alliance Society; monthly and annual general meeting minutes; committee records including minutes and reports from the Production Committee (including records related to the procurement, maintenance, and renting of equipment), the Programming Committee (including records related to exhibitions and distribution), the Executive Committee/Board of Directors (including records related to governance), and the Membership Committee; administrative records including reports, correspondence, and job descriptions related to paid staff such as the executive director and production coordinator; and member and volunteer files. There are also posters, programs, and other promotional material created for FAVA events and a complete series of newsletters and other internal communications. The photographs depict FAVA events.
