Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies fonds

Fonds consists of organizational records including photographs, brochures, correspondence and other documents which are divided into five series [see General Notes]. Content pertains to the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies, including the organization's history, members and staff, trail rides and other events, publications and advertising, finances, and administration.

Fonds consists of research correspondence, copies of personal papers, and sound recordings pertaining to Mary Vaux Walcott, Georgia Engelhard (Cromwell), Henrietta Tuzo (Wilson), Mary Schaffer Warren, Elizabeth Parker, Bess MacCarthy, Margaret Stone, Mary Jobe (Akeley), Caroline Hinman, Lillian Gest, Katie Gardiner, Gertrude Benham, Phyl Munday and others. Material was gathered during research and production of "Off the Beaten Track." Sound recordings are titled: "To Cyndi Smith from Henry Vaux," re Mary Vaux; and "Some information re women of the mountains from M.D. Fleming.

Fonds consists of 10 motion pictures pertaining mainly to skiing, particularly in the Skoki area and include 1 16mm film "Skolff" ca.1966 by Bruno Engler and 1 16mm film "Skoki" ca.1932-34 by Cliff White Sr. 3 photograph albums pertaining mainly to skiing and Sunshine 1940s and 1960s; ca.119 photographs pertaining mainly to Clifford J. White and his brothers as children, Sunshine ski area vehicles, Joe Smith at Silver City, Mt. Waddington, skiing in the Rockies and Europe, Robin Peyto and one of Castle Mountain internment camp. Albums are: "Crossing the Coast Range, B. C., March-April 1934," 29 prints recording expedition; "Sunshine in the Canadian Rockies," ca.1940, produced for Brewster Transport Company and the Canadian Pacific Railway by British Photographic Laboratories, Banff, Alberta, 18 prints; and, "Sunshine Village, Photo Album," ca.1975, 26 prints, all views except one by Bruno Engler, Alpine Films, Banff, Alberta. Textual records include a birth certificate, 1935; letter from Hilary McDowall, 1963; 2 share certificates: Ski Club of the Canadian Rockies, 1932.

Fonds consists of three series : I. Diaries, 1902-1963, 44 v of textual records; II. Scrapbooks, 1910-1933, 2 v. of textual records; III. Other material, [1946-1947], 4 items. Diaries pertain to early life in Ontario and Alberta, service as a surveyor in India, service with the Royal Engineers in France and Mesopotamia, 1915-1918, trips on leave from India to Canada, U.S.A., England, South Africa, Asia, south Pacific, and New Zealand. Diaries also detail ACC camp preparations and activities, travel to and from Banff, clubhouse work; travel details, daily activities and accounts of climbs in France and Scotland; trans-Atlantic and trans-Canada voyage; Alpine Club of Canada Vermilion Camp activities; Strathcona, Vancouver Island reconnaissance trip and climbs; travels to California, Hawaii and Japan: travel from Los Angeles to Canada, through British Columbia to Banff; ACC camp at Glacier, B.C. trip from India to Canada; life in Banff; trips and ACC camps in the Rockies, Selkirks and Kootenay district; ACC activities and operations; travels in the Okanagan, Kootenays and Columbia Valley, BC. Also included in this series are two diaries of his wife Dorothea. Scrapbooks pertain to school life, military training, surveyor's training; Alpine Club of Canada activities and lecture activities; military career, 1910-1919; surveying and mountaineering activities; Mount Everest expedition of 1921. Other material consists of items found loose in the 1946-1948 diaries, including letter written on board ship from Asia to the United States, 1947; photographs of unidentified women, 2 items; and postcard of Vancouver City Hall

Landscape photographs for Rocky Mountains highway guide book, Waterton to Jasper, with Jon Whyte (incomplete), 1974, ca.700 negatives with contact sheets and identifications; III. Stage shots of Phil Nimmons Quartet at the Banff Centre, 1974, 84 negatives and contact sheets; IV. Ground and aerial survey of Cascade Fire Road for Banff Warden Service, 1975, ca.257 negatives and contact sheet. ; Also includes photographs collected by Cavell for personal and research purposes, including Tepee at Bow Lake, hand-coloured print by Byron Harmon; "Dedicatory services at Mount Eisenhower 1958" by Bruno Engler, Alpine Films, Banff; Rocky Mountain scenic postcards by several publishers, including Byron Harmon and Bill Gibbons; slide copies of photographs by Charles Horetzky, Walter D. Fonds includes textual records and photographs pertaining to Whymper's Canadian trips, 1900-1909. Excerpts of diaries and "General Notes Upon the Canadian Rocky Mountains," 1900-1909, pertain to trans-Canada trip, 1900; Vermilion Pass, Yoho Valley and Ice River Valley explorations, 1901; observations on the CPR line, The Gap to Revelstoke, 1903; Yoho Valley, Crowsnest Pass explorations including Frank Slide, 1904; Field, 1905; Alpine Club of Canada Camp, Lake O'Hara, 1909. Whymper records detailed observations on scenery, CPR hotels and facilities, Swiss Guides, outfitters, etc. and proposes improvements. Negatives are copies of Edward Whymper's photographs and notes from his trip to the Canadian Rockies, June to August 1901, and pertain mainly to Yoho National Park and the Lake Louise area. Includes sectional panorama views. Photographs were originally part of Whymper's report to the Surveyor-General of Canada.

Frances K. Montgomery and Gaie Taylor fonds

Fonds consists of three series: I. Photographs, 1929-1976; II. Motion pictures, 1936-1964; III. Textual records, 1959-1994. Photographs and films pertain mainly to travel and camping in Europe, Ontario, western Canada and the United States. ACC camps in the Bugaboos, 1959, Fryatt Creek, 1960, Maligne Lake, 1962, and others are documented. Montgomery appears to have made the 35 mm photographs and the films, while Taylor appears to have made the 127-format negatives and superslide transparencies. Textual items are a letter and newsclippings on climbing
