Frontier Signal fonds

The fonds consists of 86 issues of the Frontier Signal from the first issue on September 28, 1914 to the last issue on August 10, 1916.

The content consists of local and general news, telegraphic war news, editorials and opinion pieces, farm and animal information, and advertisements from local businesses.

This fonds contains most issues of the Frontier Signal, excluding the following issues:

1915- Oct. 14, Oct. 21
1916- Feb. 3, July 6, July 13

Spirit River Echo fonds

The fonds consists of eight issues of the Spirit River Echo, from September 3, 1920 to April 25, 1921. The newspaper is 13 x 19 in. and 8 pages in length. The content consists of community announcements, news, and advertisements; world events; and items of general interest such as health, humour, and agriculture. On the back page is a serial story. Many issues from Sept 3, 1920 to April 25, 1921 are not in the fonds, including:

Grande Prairie Herald fonds

The fonds consists of approximately 1250 issues of the Grande Prairie Herald from the first issue in March 25, 1913 to December 15, 1938. The content consists of community news on the front page, world news, editorials, generally helpful information, and advertisements.
From March 1913 to July 1916, the paper is an eight-sheet small format, 13 x 19 in. In August 1916 the size increases to 15 x 22 in.
For the first few months, the issues are sporadic--sometimes once a week, often once or twice a month. From Aug 5, 1913, there are regular issues once a week, and from Aug 25 to Dec 29, 1914 there are two issues each week. This reverts back to one issue per week and continues until 1938.
Also included with this set of papers is a July 21, 1913 letter to the Alberta Provincial Library from Editor W. Pratt advising that the Grande Prairie Herald is available to the Library.

Northern Tribune fonds

The fonds consists of 340 issues of the Northern Tribune newspaper, from June 30, 1932 to August 10, 1939.

The paper was published weekly every Thursday, all issues from June 30, 1932 to August 10, 1939 are within the fonds, with the exception of the following issues:
1932- Sept. 22, Dec 15
1934- Nov. 22, Nov. 29, all of December
1935- Sept. 26, Dec. 19
1936- Nov. 19
1937- Jan. 21
1938- Apr. 14

In addition to these issues not included within the fonds, the Dec. 22, 1932 issue is missing it’s front page and the Dec. 29, 1939 issue is missing a large potion of each page.

There are also two Special Issues published as second sections to the July 23, 1936 paper (Peace River Exhibit for the 4th Anniversary of the newspaper) and March 18, 1937 paper (Hotel Section).

Grande Prairie Cleaners fonds

The fonds consists of a short history of Grande Prairie Cleaners written by Margaret Bowes; eight photographs of the facility, the fleet and the staff between [1950 and 1970]; a 1966 advertising proposal for Grande Prairie Cleaners from CFGP Radio; and a 1958 newspaper ad celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Cleaners and the new status of Grande Prairie as a City.

The Post Newspaper fonds

The fonds consists of 52 issues of The Post, a weekly newspaper, from July 1976 to June 1977, excluding one issue from May 26, 1977. Although based in Fairview, on the north side of the Peace River, the paper includes news from the communities south of the Peace River between Watino and Spirit River. There are also regular columns written by community reporters: Rycroft Notes by Sandy Isaac, Blueberry Mountain by Arletta Hampton, Spirit River News by Rev. Charles King, Eaglesham News by Anne Donaldson, and Wanham News by Tara Foote. Community reports from north of the river include Bear Canyon, Berwyn, Bluesky, Cherry Point, Eureka River, Griffen Creek, Hines Creek, Whitelaw and Worsely.

Francis Victor Tanner fonds

The fonds consists of records of Fran's service in WWII including 2 ration books, a public school leaving diplomain 1936 and high school examination results for 1939-1940 as well as one for his brother Donald in 1930, a confirmation certificate in 1936, his career with CFGP and the sports world, and personal papers and photographs. Also included are a Grande Prairie trackmeet first place pin and ribbon, a Sutton R.E.A. third prize ribbon, and a photograph of Fran as a young boy soldier mounted and cut from wood.

The Sexsmith Sentinel fonds

The fonds consists of newspapers from the third issue of the Sexsmith Sentinnel (September 15, 1949) to October 29, 1954. There are also two issues from June 1987 and September 1990. The papers deal mainly with local news from Sexsmith, Valhalla, Wembley, LaGlace, Rycoft, Clairmont, and the outlying districts.

Jack and Vera Soars fonds

The fonds consists of 6 photographs (4 relating to his RCAF service, 1943), 3 certificates congratulating Jack and his wife Vera on their fiftieth wedding anniversary, a CD copy of an interview Jack conducted with J.B. Oliver, a copy of a school project written by Joan (Oliver) Little on the history of CFGP, and a newspaper column "Jottings from Alberta" for which Jack was the correspondent. An accrual consists of a receipt for Norman Soars for a birth certificate (1916), high school examination results, records relating to Jack's service during WWII in the Royal Canadian Air Force including a cerificate ofappointment as Pilot Officer in 1944 and a Central Mortgage and Housing report (1957); 4 scripts, 1 appears to be a speech and a collection of jokes and newsarticles, a booklet "Alberta Folklore Quarterly" and 7 crests related to curling and 3 from CFGP. A further accrual included digital copies of recordings of Jack presenting "Tapestry of Christmas" broadcasts on CFGP.

Vera's documents include records as a student in grade 6,a grade 8 Public School Leaving Diploma, a Elementary Certificate from St. Martin's House, Toronto, for Pitman's Shorthand (1936), and one from Pitman House, Toronto where she qualified for Stage 2 Pitman Shorthand (1937) and certificates from Grande Prairie Business College qualifying for Intermediate Typing and Advanced Typing (1937), a certificate of baptism (1920), a confirmation certificate (1932) and a crest from the Grande Prairie Ladies Curling Champions.
