Biographical history
Issac Sanford Freeze, 1847-1936, was born in Penobsquis, New Brunswick. He came to Calgary, Alberta in 1883 and opened a grocery store. In 1884 he became alderman for the first council in the town of Calgary. He ran his business until he retired and passed it on to his son, Stanley. He was married to Evelyn A. Lewis and they had six children, D. Herbert, Winnie, Edna A., Stanley G. 1885-1971, Edith and Ernest C., ?-1925. Ernest and his wife, Annie, ?-1981, had one child, Audrey Gertrude (Pettigrew), 1915-1996. For further information see "Isaac S. Scope and content
The fonds consists of personal letters to his wife, and family photographs. The letters were written to his wife Evelyn in New Brunswick, before she came to Calgary to join him. The letters describe his trip across Canada, his early life in Calgary, the establishment of his grocery store, and the arrival of the railway to Calgary (page 32). Some letters are missing pages.
