Consists of a diary of a trip made by Edgar Dewdney, who served as Indian Commissioner (1879-1888) and Lieutenant-Governor (1881-1888) of the North-West Territories (later Saskatchewan and Alberta), when he first took up his post as Indian Commissioner. The diary entries describe his trip from Toronto to the North-West via Duluth, Bismarck and Fort Benton; his travels with Colonel James Macleod of the North-West Mounted Police; meetings with the Assiniboine, Cree, Blood, Blackfoot, Peigan, Sarcee [Tsuu T'ina], and Stonies; interviews with Big Bear, Little Pine, Lucky Man, Crowfoot and Eagle Tail; visits to Fort Walsh, Fort Calgary, Fort Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, Fort Pitt, Battleford, Fort Carlton, Prince Albert, and Fort Macleod; and his return to Ottawa.
