Biographical history

Harry William Gibbon Stocken, 1858-1955, was born in England and came to Canada in 1885 as an Anglican missionary, to assist Archdeacon J.W. Tims at Gleichen, Alberta. He worked with the Blackfoot (Siksika) and Sarcee (Tsuu T'ina). He could speak Blackfoot which enabled him to make translations of The Bible. He was a charter member of the Gleichen masonic lodge, which was formed in 1912. He remained on the reserve until he moved to Victoria, British Columbia in 1924. From 1924 until his retirement in 1941 he was minister of St. Martins. He and his wife, Catherine Dobie, had one daughter, Dorothy (Symonds), 1888-?. He and his second wife, Gertrude Ellin Cox, had at least three children, including Alice Thirza Gibbon, 1899-?, Gertrude Dora, 1900-?, and a child born in 1898. His memoirs were published in Among the Blackfoot and Sarcee / Georgeen Barrass, ed. - Calgary : Glenbow Museum, 1976.

General note

Consists of annual reports of Anglican-run boarding (residential) schools on the Blackfoot (Siksika), Blood, and Sarcee (Tsuu T'ina) reserves. The reports, primarily written by J.W. Tims and H.W.G. Stocken, comment on buildings, attendance, student progress, and moral and religious instruction.
