Biographical history
J. McKinley Cameron, 1879-1943, was born in Pictou, Nova Scotia. He received his law degree from Dalhousie University ca. 1900 and was called to the Bar in 1904. In 1911 he married Ethel Munro and they had two sons, Stewart and Jack. He moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1911 and joined the law firm of Stewart, Tweedie and Charman. With the dissolution of this firm in 1914 he set up his own firm, which developed into a predominantly criminal practice. His cases included the well known Emilio Picariello / Florence Lassandro (or Filumena Losandro) trial of 1922, the Lancelot Chidgey trial of 1926, and the Solloway / Mills trial of 1930. He had many clients from the southern Alberta Chinese community. He invested in petroleum development in Turner Valley, and served as director and lawyer for McDougall-Segur Oil Company. For further information see Neil Watson's article "John McKinley Cameron KC" in Citymakers : Calgarians after the Frontier / Max Foran and Sheilagh S. Jameson, eds. - Calgary : Historical Society of Alberta, Chinook Country Chapter, 1987.
