Biographical history
James Morrow Walsh, 1843-1905, was born in Prescott, Ontario. He joined the militia, and served in the Fenian Raid of 1866. He was appointed an inspector of the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) in 1873, and served with the force until 1883. Fort Walsh was named after him. He is best known for dealing with Sitting Bull during the Sioux leader's years in Canada. After resigning from the Mounted Police he founded the Dominion Coke, Coal and Transportation Company. He rejoined the force in 1897 when he was appointed Superintendent of the NWMP and Commissioner of the Yukon, during the Klondike gold rush. He retired in 1898. He married Mary Mowat in 1870 and they had a daughter, Cora. In 1967 the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada designated Walsh as a National Historic Person. Custodial history
This fonds, for many years in the custody of John Wood, was probably given to the Wood family by the daughter of J.M. Walsh.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of four scrapbooks of newsclippings regarding Sitting Bull and Walsh's work in the Cypress Hills, Walsh's service in the Yukon, and activities upon retirement. Includes photographs of James and Cora Walsh, and a copy of a letter to Cora about her father's experiences with the Sioux.
