Biographical history
The Jasper Yellowhead Historical Society (JYHS) was formed in 1963 and later incorporated in 1977. The JYHS was originally called the Jasper Historical Society and some of the founding members included Fred Brewster, Mrs. Constance Peterson, who was the first historian, and Mel Taylor, who was the first president. The JYHS organized monthly meetings which presented guest speakers, films, and field trips all related to local history, and the Society's objectives were to encourage the study of the history of Alberta and Jasper and to locate and preserve local points of historical interest. In 1974 the first Archives and Society office was established in the Municipal Library and in 1978 planning began for a permanent Museum and Archives. In 1985 the JYHS purchased and renovated a partially built building that was located on Pyramid Lake Road. The Archives moved into the building on the lower floor in 1990, with the Museum later opening on the upper floor in 1992, and the final module in the permanent gallery opened in 2001. Both the Archives and the Museum report to the Board of Directors of the Jasper Yellowhead Historical Society.
Custodial history
Mrs. M.L. Peterson of the Jasper Yellowhead Historical Society deposited these records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1972. The new owners of a local pool hall in Jasper, Alberta formerly owned by the Otto brothers, found the records in the building and threw them in the garbage. An interested passer-by found the records and turned them over to the Jasper Yellowhead Historical Society.
