Biografie

Jessie Morrison came to the West with her family via Cape Breton and Boston. She trained as a nurse at Winnipeg General Hospital, graduating in 1926. In 1941 she joined the RCAMC and was posted to England and Normandy with the #10 Canadian General Hospital. She returned to Canada in 1945 for discharge and began working with the veterans' hospitals in Edmonton (Colonel Mewburn and the Wells Pavilions) and in Calgary (Colonel Belcher Hospital) under the Federal Department of Veterans Affairs. Miss Morrison went to the Montreal for a term to assist in setting up the program at the School of Nursing Aides for the Federal Department of Veterans' Affairs (CVA). In 1949 she became Matron/Director of Nursing at the Nursing Sisters of Canada and of the Alberta Association of Registered Nurses. She was a founding member of the AARN Archives and Museum.

This interview was part of the Oral History Project of the AARN History of Nursing Practice Group. The audiotapes were deposited in the AARN Archives by Carol Ritch on their completion in 1993.

Miss Morrison was interviewed by Carol Ritch on June 22 and 29, 1993. She describes her early family life in the West and her training as a nurse at the Winnipeg General Hospital, 1923-1926. The major part of the interview covers her experiences as Matron of Government House geriatric care: in staffing, services, nursing care, spiritual care, problem cases, medications, and special supplies and equipment. Team nursing was part of the care developed at the Home. Miss Morrison discussed her admiration for Agnes McLeod's work with the DVA and in public health nursing in southern Alberta. The interview is recorded on two audiotape cassettes and lasts 120 minutes. A photographic portrait of Miss Morrison (4 views) and biographical information on Colonel Mewburn and the Mewburn Pavilion are included in the textual records.
