Biographical history
Jessop Nott was first involved in the funeral business in Toronto for 3 years before coming to Medicine Hat to carry on his profession. He was the manager of the Patterson and Company funeral home in 1908. In 1910, Jessop Nott began his own business called Nott's Funeral Home. The location of his original building is unknown. In 1913, he opened his new establishment, made of red pressed brick on Ottawa Street (now 5th Street). This building, modern for the time, provided a waiting parlor, chapel with a gothic interior and stained glass windows and semi-detached morgue. This establishment served the community until 1945, when a former employee, Thomas Cook, took over the business upon the death of Mr. Nott. It was renamed Cook's Funeral Chapel until the retirement of Mr. Cook, but the original establishment continues today as Cook Southland. Jessop Nott was very involved in the community, helping to establish the local Boy Scouts.
