Biographical history

Joseph A. Weiss was born in Zug, Switzerland in 1896. He immigrated to Canada circa (ca.) 1922 and acquired a homestead in Alberta. He worked a trapline north of Jasper National Park and began to operate as a photographer and ski and mountain guide in the area. From 1945 until ca. 1955 he operated a photograph studio in Jasper, Alberta, and after 1955 he was a warden and manned a lookout in Jasper National Park. In 1972 a mountain in the Winston Churchill Range was named after him and in 1980 an exhibition of his photographs was held at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta. Weiss died in February 1995.

Fonds consists of negatives depicting various people, views, animals, buildings and sporting events in the Jasper area, Alberta.
