Biographical history
Born in Estonia in July, 1864. He was commissioned by the Lutheran Church of Estonia in 1891 to be a Missionary to Latvian and Estonian immigrants in North America. In 1899 the Wisconsin district of the Missouri Synod accepted him in a similar capacity. He studied dogmatics at Concordia Lutheran Seminary in Springfield, Illinois, to ensure he was in concert with the Missouri Synod. Johann Sillak immigrated to Alberta in 1901 to answer the call of Josephburg's St. Peter's Lutheran Church - both German and Latvian. He served the eastern European Lutherans living in southern and central Alberta from headquarters in Calgary and Medicine Hat. He was also a linguist and worked on many translations of German works into Estonian, Lettish, Russian and Latvian languages for the church, including The Book of Concord (1902-1917), the Athanasian Creed, the Augsburg Confession and Luther's Small Catechism. He received a Doctorate of Philosophy on the basis of those works. He was elected to a life membership in the Concordia Historical Institute in 1946. John Sillak died in Medicine Hat, Alberta in December 1953 at 89 years of age.
