Biographical history

John Davies was born in the small of community of Kidsgrove in Staffordshire, England. Davies came to Canada in 1909 and continued his studies at Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto. He was ordained into the Anglican ministry in April, 1913 and headed north to the Yukon, becoming rector of St. Paul's Church in Dawson City. He served at Dawson City from 1913 to 1919. He returned to Ontario where he served in various communities until his retirement in 1956.

Custodial history

The Anglican Church Heritage Society in the Yukon acquired John Davies' papers and photographs from Mrs. Emily Hobson, Rev. Davies' step-daughter. Eleanor Gardhouse, a member of the Oxford Genealogy Society, personally delivered these photographs and other material of John Davies' to the Anglican Church Diocese of Yukon. When first received, the Church Heritage Society separated out a selection of photographs (primarily the non-diocesan views) to donate to the Archives, and these photographs were accessioned as 87/101. Subsequently, the Church Heritage Society decided to donate most of the remainder of the Davies collection (88/35) to the Yukon Archives as well.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of photographs collected by John Davies from his life in Dawson City, Yukon, ca. 1914-1918. There are views of Mr. and Mrs. Davies, Dawson City, Rampart House, dredges, the Martha Black IODE Chapter, the Yukon Lawn Tennis Club, the Carcross Residential School (Chooutla), Rev. Isaac and Sadie Stringer, Anglican clergy and the interior of the rectory. The textual material includes correspondence with Bishop Stringer, official certificates of priesting and incumbency for John Arthur Davies, a medical report on Mr. Davies, one book on Holy Communion, letter from Cecil Swanson, and photocopied newspaper clippings paying tribute to Rev. Davies on the occasion of his 100th birthday.

In 87/101 eighty-six prints are in an album; 3 colour prints in this album are identical; 13 prints (not in the album) are copies. In 88/35 twenty-eight prints were removed from an album and their original order maintained.
