John (Jack) Lessard was born in Cranbourne, Quebec. He came west in 1901 and owned Lessard's Trading Store at the west end of Athabasca by 1907. He traded from Athabasca to Fort Chipewyan. In 1914 he married Katie Juneau, also from Quebec. They made their home on Cunliffe Street in Athabasca. They had two children :Jack and Marguerite. Katie died of tuberculosis. In 1925 Jack married Ethel O'Brien, a sister to Mrs. Katherine Flynn of Colinton.They had one child, Patricia, in 1927. He built a new store in 1928 on the east corner of Litchfield (50th Ave.) and Fleming (48th St.). He built a new home in 1929 (47th St.) but died before he could move into the house. Mrs. Lessard continued operating the Lessard Department Store. In 1933 she became the first woman to sit on Athabasca's Town Council. She opened a boarding house in her home in the 1930s. In [1945] she and Patsy moved to Edmonton. Ethel died in 1955. Patsy married Archie Voaklander of Colinton. Patsy died in 2007.

The fonds consists of photographs of: Athabasca High School classes (1943), boiler being rolled from Edmonton to Athabasca, John Patrick Crowe, Charles and Antoinette Daigneau, dog team on Litchfield Avenue; First Communion, 1931, at St. Gabriel's Roman Catholic Church; First Nations women, G.G.Fowler, Archie and Mary Gorman, Ethel Lessard beside "Welcome to Athabasca" sign on Landing Trail, views of the 1929 Lessard house, views of the 1928 Lessard Store, Malcolm McDonald, interior views of the first St. Gabriel's Roman Catholic Church, Mrs. Scott, scows on the Athabasca River, trucks on the Alaska Highway near Athabasca, and Alma Waite. The textual record is notes on a conversation between Marilyn Mol and Patsy Voaklander (Lessard).

Robin A. Brooke sent a photo with a poetic inscription to Sister Laverty. Biographical information came from the Athabasca Archives clipping files.
