Biographical history
John Peters was born on May 15, 1918, in Russia to Mennonite parents. He came to Canada with his parents at age 5. He spent his younger years growing up in the Lymberg area. He joined the Canadian Army in 1940 ( to the dismay of his parents whose faith did not believe in war) and served for five years. While stationed in England, John met his future wife, Ruby, and on their return to Canada, they settled on a farm and raised five children. He related to his family that in basic training he qualified as a sharpshooter, but he didn't want to spend his war years shooting enemy soldiers, so he deliberately missed the targets. The family also said he would never sit with his back to a door or window due to his wartime experience. After his passing his family discovered the handwritten letter amid his personal papers.
