Biografie
John Smith Stewart was born in Brampton, Ontario on May 18, 1877. He moved west to Edmonton, North-West Territories, now Alberta, in 1896 and attended Normal School there. He taught at Namao Crossroads for a time and then circa (ca.) 1899 traveled east to attend Toronto Dental College. In ca. 1900 he became a private in the Lord Strathcona Horse Regiment, serving in the Boer War in South Africa until ca. 1901, returning to Lethbridge, North-West Territories in 1902 to open a dental practice, which he retained until his retirement in 1960. He attended the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario 1907-1908 and was made a major in the 25th Battery, Canadian Field Artillery (CFA). In 1911 Stewart was elected as a Conservative Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Lethbridge, a position he held until 1925. In ca. 1914 Stewart raised and commanded the 20th Battery CFA. In 1916 he went overseas as a lieutenant colonel in command of the 7th Brigade, CFA, later commanding the 4th Brigade, CFA. In 1917 he became a brigadier general in command of the 3rd Canadian Division, a position he held until 1919. In 1930 he was elected Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Lethbridge and served in this position until 1935. Stewart was decorated with the Distinguished Service Order, the Croix de Guerre, and Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George and made an honourary life member of the Royal Canadian Artillery Association. He also received an honourary degree from the University of Alberta, and was elected an honourary life member of the Royal Canadian Dental Corps Association, the Calgary Dental Society, the Edmonton and District Dental Society, and the Lethbridge and District Dental Society. He died in 1970, survived by his wife.

Fonds consists of records pertaining to John Smith Stewart's military career, professional career as a dentist, and his personal life, and includes invitations, pamphlets, postcards, maps, correspondence, articles, newspaper clippings, speeches, telegrams, historical/biographical sketches, personal reminiscences, awards, historical and medical journals, a 3rd Canadian Division report on operations, souvenir booklets, a watercolour painting, metal plate etchings, a list of dental clients and financial records, programmes, lists of veterans and veteran activities, and transcripts of an oral history by John Smith Stewart. Fonds also includes aerial and aerial composite photographs, and other photographs depicting military personnel, veterans, parades, a lacrosse team, Namao School District, and John Smith Stewart's dental office.
