Biographical history

Jon Anthony Whyte was born in 1941 in Banff to Jack White, son of merchant Dave White, and Barbara Carpenter Whyte. After a public school education in Banff and Medicine Hat, Alberta, Jon received a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Alberta in 1964, followed by a Masters of Arts in Medieval English in 1967. In 1974, he received a Masters in Communications from Stanford University, California. During his time at University of Alberta, Jon worked as a broadcaster for CKUA Radio and as a Sessional Professor. Upon returning to Banff circa 1968, Jon managed the Book and Art Den and helped establish Summerthought Press. In 1969 he became a columnist for the Crag and Canyon. In 1970 he became a board member of the Peter Whyte Foundation (now Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies). From 1980 until his death, Jon served as Curator of the Heritage Collections at the Whyte Museum of the Rockies. Jon also helped form the Writer's Guild of Alberta. He became President of the Guild in 1990. Jon received the Guild's "Stephan Stephansson Award for Poetry" in 1983. He passed away in 1992.

Custodial history

In 1992, Donald J. Bourdon, Head Archivist of the Whyte Museum of Canadian Rockies found the recording in the Jon Whyte fonds. Bourdon donated the recording to the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1992.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of a recoding of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra performing "Cantata de la Guerre" circa 1960 that Jon Whyte acquired while working as a broadcaster for CKUA radio in Edmonton.
