Biographical history
Joseph R. Schmitz, 1919-ca. 1985, served in the Queen's Own Rifles, attaining the rank of captain. From 1965 to 1967 he was head of the Military History Department at the Glenbow Museum, Calgary and from 1967 to 1973 was head of the Extension Department. He was president of the Calgary Citizens' Centennial Committee assembled to celebrate Canada's centennial in 1967, and in 1974 was appointed executive director of Century Calgary. He was also president of the Chinook Country Chapter of the Historical Society of Alberta.

Scope and content
The collection consists of photographs, articles, and documents collected regarding western Canadian military history including photographs of the Red Cross Reception Centre in Calgary, various military units, Sarcee Army Camp (1911-1916) and the 1885 Riel Rebellion (North West Rebellion). Includes some personal correspondence about historical events and Century Calgary. Includes typewritten notes on curation of military history collections, and a scrapbook about Calgary history (compiled 1966).
