Biographical history

Joseph Victor Begin, 1856-1932, was born in Quebec and early in life worked on steamboats on the St. Lawrence River. He served in the militia for over three years and because of this training was appointed an inspector on joining the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) in 1885. He was subsequently stationed at Regina, Prince Albert, Maple Creek, and Battleford, Saskatchewan, Fort Macleod, Alberta and Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba. From 1900 to 1902 he served in South Africa, and on returning to Canada was posted to Lethbridge, Prince Albert and Maple Creek. Begin married Alexina Charland in 1891 and they had two children, Jean Berchmans, 1897-1971, and Renalde (Reginalde) Francoise (Capdevielle), 1892-1956. He served in First World War, and in 1929 moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he died.
