Biographical history

High River, Alberta writer, Joy Veals Duncan, 1934- , started the Frontier Nursing Project in 1974, with the intention of gathering together material related to nursing in Canada's frontier areas, including the northern parts of Alberta, British Columbia, and Manitoba, and the NWT, and writing a book on the topic. She had practiced as a nurse at a hospital for native peoples in northern Manitoba. During the next four years, she recorded 29 interviews, and collected manuscript and photographic material from a total of 68 former frontier nurses.
