Biographical history

Dr. Jacob Alfred Kanouse, ca. 1820- , and his wife Hannah Hall, ?-1852, were early residents of Fort Benton, Montana, USA. Their children included Harry, Lillian (Lepper), Annie, Charlie, Ed, and Henry Alfred "Fred", 1847-1922. Fred Kanouse moved to southern Alberta in 1871 to engage in the whiskey trade, and after the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) arrived he operated a hotel in Fort Macleod. Fred married Na-Ta-Wis-Ta-Cha in about 1871, then married a second time about 1880, to Makkaakii White Eagle, daughter Revenge Walker. They had five children, Chikie, Alfred, 1884- , Charles Henry, 1889-1963, Edward Edgar, 1891-1902, and Chris Shade, 1896- . In 1897 Kanouse married a third time, to Emily L. Chambers, 1845-1938. The fonds consists of photographs of Charlie's ranch near Fort Benton and the Kanouse family (1880s-1957); letters, articles and notes about Kanouse family history (1951, 1977-1979), and a letter from J.A. Kanouse to his sister (1931).
