Biographical history

Kathleen Adeline Martin was born in Manitoba in 1888. She trained as a teacher, then moved to Vancouver to work in an office. In 1916, she applied to Bishop of Yukon, I.O. Stringer, for a teaching post. She was posted to Fort Selkirk, where she taught school, Sunday School, gave medical attention to the residents, and was a licensed lay reader. On September 5, 1929, Kathleen Martin married a trapper, Alex Coward. She did not like the name so, the couple was known as Mrs. Cowaret and Mr. Coward. When the highway opened in 1953, Mrs. Cowaret and her husband moved to Minto with the rest of the residents of Fort Selkirk, where she ran the McCabe Creek Post Office, and Mr. Cowaret ran the trading post. The local children were sent to residential school, so she stopped teaching. In 1955 Mrs. Cowaret was elected to be the Yukon Diocese representative to the Anglican Church General Synod. In 1958 she received a Dominion Life Membership in the Women's Auxiliary, and accompanied Bishop and Mrs. Greenwood to England. On her return she went directly into hospital in Whitehorse, dying on October 26, 1958. Biographical information from "Five Pioneer Women of the Anglican Church in the Yukon", 1964.
