Biographical history

In 1910 the Reverend Neil Donald Keith, a Presbyterian minister in Eastern Canada, came to Red Deer, Alberta with his wife and family to establish the Alberta Ladies' College of Red Deer. The family had at least four children: Murray, Helena, Marion and Kathleen. All three daughters attended the Alberta Ladies College. Rev. Keith remained president of the college and its successor institution, Westminster Ladies College in Edmonton, Alberta, until its final closure in 1924. He and his family then moved to a parish in St. Claire, Quebec. In 1929 Rev. Keith was the pastor of Rockfield United Church in Montreal, Quebec. Helena Keith became a high school English teacher in Montreal, before eventually moving to Vancouver, B.C. The Alberta Ladies College's main building was completed in early spring 1913 at a cost of over $65,0000. In 1916, the college's board of governors sold the buildings and land to the provincial government for $125,000. The college, still called the Alberta Ladies College of Red Deer, took up temporary residence in Assiniboia Hall on the campus of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta. In 1918, the college moved to rented quarters at the Strathcona Hotel in the same city, and the name of the college was changed to Westminster Ladies College. The college closed in 1924. The College main building in Red Deer was later used as a Soldiers' Hospital (1917-1922), then as a Provincial Training Hospital for mentally handicapped. It is now part of Michener Centre
