Biographical history
Born in Russia in [1860?], August Kirstein married Wilheminia Draeger and came to Winnipeg in 1891. Around the turn of the century they came to the Wetaskiwin area where Wilheminia's family lived and farmed west of Wetaskiwin. They had five sons and one daughter. In 1906 they moved into Wetaskiwin and set up a sawmill and a mill for grinding wheat. In 1913, they moved to the Sexsmith area with one son Fritz remaining in Wetaskiwin. Wilheminia died in 1923 and August married again. A son (Haina) was born in 1927. August died in 1933. Fritz began working for Pat Burns and Co. in 1912 and opened City Meat Market in 1921. He married Lillian Jensen and they had four sons, Ken, Ray, Fred and Bob. Fred and Bob worked in the store with Fritz for twenty years until his retirement in 1959. The sons continued operating the store until 1961. Fritz Kirstein died in 1968 and Lillian in 1981.
