Biographical history
The Kiwanis Club of Red Deer was established in October 1951. It is part of an international body that was organized in Detroit, Michigan in 1915. The Kiwanis Club of Waskasoo, the second group in the area, was formed in 1964. In the early 1950s, the Kiwanis Club of Red Deer, otherwise known as the Downtown Club, initiated an ambitious project that resulted in the construction of the Red Deer Twilight Lodge, a seniors residence. Other projects the Downtown Club was involved with were the Red Deer Festival of Performing Arts, the Kiwanis Music Festival, and the Christmas Carol Festival. The Club also provides camp facilities for the Red Deer and District Girl Guides at Sylvan Lake. The Waskasoo Club worked in partnership with the Red Deer Public Library in developing a Children's Library, as well as assisting the Big Brothers and Big Sisters in purchasing a house both groups use for their functions. In 1994, the Kiwanis Club of Waskasoo disbanded. In a meeting with the Kiwanis Club of Red Deer, it was decided that all obligations, assets and records of the Waskasoo club would be turned over to the Downtown Club, which continues to operate.
