Knute Mattsson was born in 1890 in Kristianstads, Sweden. At age 17 he left Sweden and arrived in North Dakota in 1907 with his cousin Carl Pearson. In 1909 he came to Southern Alberta and was one of the first to break land in Pendant d'Oreille. He later married Hilda Fogelberg, who had three young daughters, Thea, Elisabeth Helga, and Hilda. After many years of building up the homestead and developing a threshing business with his brother, Knute sold his property in 1970.

Biographical history
Hilda Fogelberg (nee Brannstrom) was born in Sweden around 1889. She immigrated to Canada with her first husband, John Fogelberg, and their daughter, Thea in 1908. In 1912 they took up homestead in Pendant d'Oreille. After getting into trouble with the law John abandoned them to fight in World War One. In order to support her three daughters, Hilda worked in the cook car for the local Parkinson's family and their threshing crew. She also baked the bread for the local NWMP through their donation of the ingredients. Hilda married her second husband, Knute Mattsson at an unknown date. She later returned to the United States with her three daughters.
