Biographical history
Edwin Harland, 1845-1923, was born in Guelph Township, Ontario. He operated a milling business in Highgate, Ontario, and married Harriet Ann Scott there in 1877. The family migrated to the Pincher Creek, Alberta district, and established the Bar X Ranch near Twin Butte. They had five children, all born at Highgate, Eva Maud (Burns), 1878-1951, Arthur Scott, 1884-1920, Stanley Watson, 1885-1957, Murton Shore, 1890-1928, and Bessie Beulah, 1892-1992. Murton and his wife Esther (Pickering) took over the operation of the Bar X Ranch upon the retirement of Edwin in 1920. Stanley Harland married Mary Eloise Tolson, 1885-1978) of Highgate, Ontario. They left the ranch and farmed at Twin Butte. Stanley and Mary "Lou" had four children, Eleanor Ida Grace (Kleven), 1920-1945, Phyllis Mary (Smith), 1922-1973, John Tolson, 1924-2010, and Marion (Dommer), 1926- . All three daughters became teachers. John and his mother jointly operated the Twin Butte farm. John was married briefly and had one stepson, Roy and five grandchildren. Eleanor Harland married Mr. Joy Kleven of Youngstown and they had two children, Eloise (Schober) and Eleanor (Kreiser). Eleanor Kreiser and husband Brian live in Youngstown, Alberta. Brian's parents, Joe, 1908-1982, and Agnes (Kuczma), 1920-2003, operated a garage and electrical shop in Altario, Alberta before moving to Youngstown in 1959. There, Joe worked as a mechanic for the Special Areas municipality, and Agnes worked as a cook and institutional aide.

Scope and content
The Harland papers consist of a brief family history, family greeting cards, correspondence, certificates, tax records, brand registration, and complete records relating to oil and gas development on the Harland farm. The Kleven papers consist of Eleanor Harland Kleven's teaching material and photographs of the sawmill at Winfield, floats in the Stampede parade and the Keith Sanatorium; the Kreiser papers consist of two silent, colour home movies featuring Banff vacation, family garage business, earth-moving machinery, pipeline construction, cattle drive, airplane, Compeer Sports Day, and a parade in Consort; there are also tickets and photos of a K.D. Lang concert in Consort, Alberta.
