Biographical history

Archibald L.H. Lawrence (1898-1990) graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1923 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He came to Lethbridge in 1937-1938 to work for the Department of Transport as a District Airway Engineer. During World War II, he supervised construction of the southern Alberta airfields used for British Commonwealth air training. From 1949-1964, he served as Lethbridge City Manager.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of Somerville's 8mm and Super 8mm films on a variety of subjects, such as aviation films from 1939-1946 (including those depicting Commonwealth training); views of Lethbridge, 1946-1967; irrigation works; Somerville's travels in Quebec, the Maritimes, Winnipeg and Hawaii; Calgary and other local stampedes; and footage of scenery all across Alberta and British Columbia, including scenes in Vancouver Island, Banff and Glacier National Park.
