Biographical history
Organized about 1986 under the Missions' Department Labourers for Christ used volunteer labour, locally and nationally, to build and renovate churches and other church buildings across the country. Bill McKie of Brandon Manitoba was appointed Canadian Coordinator in 1987 and he and his wife, Sylvia, served as the from team to evaluate projects, provide congregations with technical assistance and to coordinate the organization of volunteer construction workers pulled mostly from the retired, unemployed or students who wished to assist raising churches. They helped reduce the costs of construction, allowing loans from the church extension fund to go further. It was based on an American program of a similar name. The Canadian program disbanded in early 2005.
Custodial history
The records were donated to The Lutheran Historical Institute by Bill and Sylvia McKie and the Labourers for Christ organization in a series of donations between 1997 and 2000. Other records were found within the records held by the Alberta-British Columbia District office of Lutheran Church-Canada.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of correspondence, forms for congregations (including agreements with labourers, congregational applications and requests for Labourers for Christ assistance, checklists for projects, etc.) technical notes on building projects, architectural plans and photographs of projects under construction and completed. Some plans are folded within the records but others are rolled and stored in an oversize box.
