Biographical history

Lawrence Boyd Bruce was born in Medicine Hat in January of 1911. His parents, James and Mary Jane (nee Bell) Bruce, took up residence in the community prior to 1907, when James was employed as the local Chief of Police. Lawrence, a local musician, was employed for a time in the late 1920's, at the Monarch Theatre in Medicine Hat. He played several instruments and also composed music. During this time, he established the Lawrence Bruce Publishing Company in Medicine Hat and published a number of his own musical compositions, as well as those of other musicians. The exact location of the company has not yet been determined but it may have been operated out of the family home. Lawrence had several siblings including Norman B., the first to establish a free flight record of a glider in Canada at Medicine Hat, Tom, and a sister Jennie Helen Fox. Lawrence passed away tragically in 1933.
