Lorne, Marquess of

The Marquess of Lorne, 1845-1914, was the Governor-General of Canada from 1878 to 1883. In 1881 he became the first of Canada's Governors-General to visit the western Canadian prairies. The three month expedition left Quebec on July 18, 1881, travelling by the still unfinished Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), canoe, steamboat and carriage. The expedition visited Fort Ellice, Fort Carlton, Prince Albert, Battleford, Qu'Appelle, Calgary, Fort Macleod, and Waterton. For further information see Rev.
