Biographical history
Fur trader, Author, 1880-1964. L.A. Romanet came to Canada from France in 1903 as an employee of the fur trading company Revillon Freres. He began his career at their Ungava post in northern Quebec. In 1916 he joined the Hudson's Bay Company as an inspector; by 1923 he was sent to Edmonton to be district manager for the Athabasca and Mackenzie River Districts and general manager of the Alberta and Arctic Transportation Company. In the latter post he had charge of all the Company's river and lake paddlewheel steamboats in the north. After he left the Company in 1930 Mr. Romanet was employed at various times as an agent for North Star Oil Company, Abasand Oils Ltd (1937-1941) and as an inspector for the Northwest Service Command during World War II.

Fonds consists of these series: I Career papers (1903-1944). Includes accounts, correspondence, essays, journals, memoirs, and reports relating to the Hudson's Bay Company, North Star Oil, and Revillon Freres. II Certificates and memorabilia (1880-1928). Includes birth, education, and military certificates. III Clippings (1925-1937). IV Correspondence (1911-1945). Relates to accounts; expeditions; lectures; publications. V Inventions (1903-1913). Mr. Romanet developed a motorized sledge, which he patented in France. VI Lectures, radio talks (1925-1945). VII Literary manuscripts (1930-1937). Includes correspondence, drafts, notebooks and typescripts relating to legends, stories and Mr. Romanet's autobiography, Kabluk of the North. VIII Maps (1943-1944). Northwest Service Command installations; weather stations; Alcan Highway. IX Photographs (1903-1940). Mainly fur trade, Inuit, steamboats on northern rivers; and family (625 images). Many of the arctic and Inuit photographs are by Gaston Herodier, a compatriot.
