History

The Yukon Airways and Exploration Co. was formed in 1927. Its primary objective was to open up the vast unexplored territories, much of which was inaccessible by land. The main office was in Whitehorse with branches in Dawson City and Mayo. Clyde Wann was the President and Andy Cruickshank, a pilot in the First World War, was General Manager. In October 1927 the company's first plane was purchased, a Ryan Monoplane. The primary function of the company was to carry mail and freight. The crashes of 'Queen of the Yukon II' and the 'Northern Light' in November 1929 and a shortage of cash made it impossible for Yukon Airways to continue operations and it was forced to close.
