History

Joseph Celestine MacDonald, ?-1908, was born in Prince Edward Island and trained as a teacher. He married Catherine Ayers in the 1880s and moved to Brandon, Manitoba about 1892. Joseph worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) there and in Fort William, Ontario. The family came to Calgary, Alberta in 1901 where he worked for the Calgary Brewing and Malting Company. He and his wife had five children, three of whom lived to adulthood, Ethel, 1888-1978, Joseph Walter "Boyd", 1891-?, and Marion Estelle (Boyd), 1896-?. Ethel trained at the Calgary Normal School, taught at St. Ann's School, and was very active in local dramatic productions. She was also active in the Catholic Women's League, serving as president of the Calgary Junior Subdivision in 1927.
