Notice biographique

Benjamin MacLeod, d. 1925, and Catherine F. MacLeod, d. 1923, originally from Prince Edward Island, farmed in the district of High River, Alberta. They had at least three sons. In 1913 one of the sons, Horace Brenton, 1888-1978, married Elsie Emma Dechman, 1888-1960, born in Elmsvale, Nova Scotia. They operated the family farm jointly and were active in the United Farmers of Alberta, the United Church, and several community organizations. Horace was the mayor of High River from 1940 to 1950. Elsie was an advocate of learning and a founder of public library services in the community, a feminist, and a supporter of democratic socialism. In 1941 she was the founding president of the High River Pioneer Savings and Credit Union, believed to be the world's first all-women's credit union until it merged with the Highwood Credit Union in 1953. Horace and Elsie had four children, Ernest John, Annie Kathleen, Ben McNicol, and Muriel Jessie (Dais), who all completed university degrees.
