Biographical history

Marie Nelson (nee Marie Helen Brown), 1925-1978, was an active community worker and historian in Chestermere, Conrich and Calgary where she spent her life. She taught piano, was a regional director and member of the provincial executive of the Alberta Federation of Home and School Associations and was vice-chairman of the Historical Society. In addition she was also a docent at the Glenbow Museum, was involved in the Canadian Cancer Society and the Alberta Music Educators' Association, and helped compile the history of Central United Church, Calgary. She was married to Mervin Nelson and they had a daughter, Susan Nelson.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of personal files relating to the various organizations of which she was a member, and scrapbooks she kept on various local and historical events. The scrapbooks, which Marie began to compile when she was 14 years old, primarily consist of newspaper clippings and programs for events such as music recitals, dinners, theatrical productions, sports events, royal visits and social activities. The first scrapbook includes material related to homefront activities during the Second World War.
